Steve Harris and Nicko McBrain won this week's Wikimetal poll, which asked "what is the best rhythm section (bass and drums)?".
With 49% of the votes, the Iron Maiden duo came out far ahead of the other contenders. In second place, with 24% of the votes, were Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, and in third place were Geezer Butler and Bill Ward with 21%.
Nicko McBrain joined the band in 1982, before the release of Peace Of Mind, Iron Maiden's fourth album. Steve Harris saw him play at a show by the band Trust, who opened for Iron Maiden in 1981. When Clive Burr left the band, Harris called McBrain to take his place.
Below, read what Steve Harris said about McBrain:
“It’s hard to describe him if you don’t know him. People see him in clips and stuff, and they think he’s crazy – and he is! But he’s so much more than that. He’s a more complex guy than you might imagine. He’s a lot of fun. I’m a bit shy, so when we go out to meet people, I usually take him with me because he’s funny and talks a lot, he takes the pressure off me. I just have to stay in the background smiling!”
Technically he's a great drummer and can play all kinds of music. Drummers from other bands sit behind him to see what he's doing, but he doesn't even look at what he's hitting most of the time. He just lowers his head and plays.”
