Spotify the music streaming service, announced last Wednesday, the 13th, that it now displays music videos for its premium users. The measure is still in the testing phase. The feature was made available to subscribers in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya.
International and national artists were selected for the beta phase of the feature. Some of the chosen artists include Ed Sheeran , Doja Cat , Ice Spice , Anitta , Henrique & Juliano , Luísa Sonza , Zé Felipe , Ludmilla, among others.
“Often, in my own experience and that of countless others, music videos play a fundamental role in hooking you. They make you stop being a listener and become a fan,” said Charlie Hellman , vice president and head of music products at Spotify , in a statement . “They are an important part of many artists’ toolkit, and it’s natural that they live in the same place that more than half a billion people choose to listen to music.”
The presence of music videos is not the platform's first foray into visual aspects. In 2019, the platform released Canvas , a feature that allows artists to create three- to eight-second looping videos to be displayed during the playback of their music, replacing the album or EP cover.
More recently, in 2023, Spotify implemented Clips , which are short videos included in tracks, albums, and on the artist's profile, where they can give fans access to their creative process.
