Spotify is being sued for the unauthorized use of tracks by Tom Petty, RATM, and Stevie Nicks.

The service is denying copyright on the tracks

Spotify is being sued by Wixen Music Publishing for $1.6 billion (approximately R$5.2 billion).

The company accused the streaming service of using tracks by artists such as Tom Petty, Rage Against The Machine, Stevie Nicks, and Neil Young inappropriately.

The lawsuit was filed on December 29th when Wixen, the company responsible for the artists' compositions, alleged that the service had been using them without authorization and without providing any compensation to the company.

In the music world, tracks have two types of copyrights: the sound of the recording, which is usually the responsibility of the record label, and its composition, which is authored by the composer and/or the publishing company.

No statement has been released by Spotify so far.
