Soulfly

Foreign name, Brazilian soul! Soulfly is ours.

Daniel Dystyler: Starting off this National Pride segment, and we're not going to say much, we're going straight to Via Marques with Nando Machado covering one of the greatest National Pride events there is, the Soulfly show. Wasn't it amazing, Nando?

Nando Machado: It was amazing, it was amazing. Packed house, sold out, almost two thousand people going crazy, Mr. Max Cavalera was emotional, you'll see how happy he was.

NM: I'm here, Nando Machado, doing a mega coverage, a Wikimetal coverage. I'm alone, without my two Wikimetal companions. I'm here at the Corjos show and soon Soulfly will be at Via Marques, this new venue in São Paulo. Corjos is destroying everything here, the place is packed, a lot of people are still outside trying to get in and Corjos is tearing it up. Soon Mr. Max Cavalera will be on stage with the great Soulfly. This night promises to be special, a special night here, February 25th, 2012. The crowd is shouting "Soulfly" here at Via Marques. For the first time in 14 years, these guys are coming back to Brazil. Mr. Max Cavalera was in Brazil last year with Cavalera Conspiracy opening for Iron Maiden. But there's really a lot of anticipation to see this legend, the biggest name in Brazilian metal of all time, Mr. Max Cavalera. Let me talk to my friend Marcão. Marcão! We're here at Wikimetal!

Marcão : Hey Spaghetti.

NM: Tell me something.

M: Speak, speak.

NM: How many years of lobotomy?

M: 25 years of lobotomy!

NM: After 25 years with Lobotomia, you were in a new band, is that right?

M: We're putting together a new band right now, the members of Lobotomia with the drummer from Ratos. Great Spaghetti, who's right here in front of us.

NM: Great Spaghetti! It's been so long since I've seen you, Spaghetti.

Spaghetti: Hey, bro? What's up, everything alright?

NM: So, the new band, Foice, how's it going?

S: I'm at Foice now, man, and from here on out it's all good. The heavy sound in my ears and that's it.

NM: There's Spaghetti, doing the Foice. And tell me something, what are your expectations for seeing Grandpa Max Cavalera on stage again, tearing it up?

M: Dude, this guy is part of our family, he's Spaghetti's cousin.

S: He lived in my house, I lived in his house, is that right? And here's the thing, he assures me he's going to destroy it. He has a facial problem but…

NM: Oh, he'll ace that! I'd say Max is the biggest name in Brazilian metal of all time, wouldn't you agree?

M: From the world! From the world! Everyone loves him all over the world. I even went to Europe with Lobotomia. Everyone loves Max, Max is the crust , he's the devil!

NM: He went on stage! Mr. Max Cavalera! Impressive. Impressive what Mr. Max Cavalera provokes in Brazilian headbangers. Impressive.

Max: The moment everyone's been waiting for has arrived. Let's blow this shit up!

NM: Sepultura's first song here. Sensational! It's spine-chilling, as my friend Rafael Masini says! Listen to this, guys!

Historic moment! Historic moment! Max Cavalera playing the classics, Sepultura with the band Soulfly! An exciting moment in the show! Max Cavalera introduces his son Zyon. A great drummer, Zyon must be around… 22 years old at most. Several percussion instruments were set up on stage. Some toms, some bass drums. There's going to be a real thrash moment now. Impressive. People with cameras taking pictures of Max, this atmosphere is really cool. Huge expectation from Brazilian headbangers to see Mr. Max Cavalera in Brazil once again. Always welcome, Max! Always very welcome! The place was packed, full to the brim. It's great that this new venue is opening its doors to metal in Brazil.

Historic moment, historic moment! Max Cavalera calls his brother, the great Igor Cavalera, to the stage. The crowd goes wild! The son and now the brother. Troops of Doom!

You have no idea what's happening on the dance floor. Arise, now. Awesome! It's amazing.
And hey, Marcão! What is Max Cavalera's importance to Brazilian music?

M: It's not even for Brazilian music, it's for the music of planet Earth. It's the soundtrack to the end of the world.

NM: It's total destruction, it's chaos. It's the end of the world!

M: Yeah, totally. There aren't any bands.

NM: Max really has incredible charisma, doesn't he?

M: I hope he lives another 100 years.

NM: That's right, we're also rooting for Max Cavalera. May he continue to rock! The Cavalera family on stage! Richie, Igor, Zyon, and Max Cavalera!

Now we're screwed.

I'm going to take this opportunity to talk to the people who saw this historic Soulfly show. I'm going to talk to my friend Marcos Hermes, a great photographer. Marcos Hermes, what is the significance of seeing Mr. Max Cavalera back in Brazil?

Marcos Hermes: It was a historic show, wasn't it? A historic show because, besides the fact that he hadn't been to Brazil for so long, the setlist was sensational, he brought his family on stage, that was really moving, it was awesome.

NM: That's great, I agree with you. And Edgar! You were at Sepultura's first show in São Paulo, in the east side. At a place called Heavy Metal. With Overdose, back in the Bestial Devastation days. What do you think about seeing Max Cavalera back in São Paulo in 2012?

Edgar: I thought Max had the same charisma he had in 1986, you know? And I thought the high point was when Igor played…

NM: Troops of Doom?

E: Doom. And that showed the chemistry the brothers have. But the '86 show, with Jairo on guitar, was phenomenal.

NM: I think that was the only Sepultura show with Jairo T. on guitar, to this day, right? Because Andreas joined later. In São Paulo, in São Paulo.

E: Yes, in São Paulo. Soon after, Andreas came on stage, and we watched him perform. The first time with Ratos and the second time with just Sepultura.

NM: That's great. Let's see if we can talk to anyone else. Okay?

Ricardo Batalha: Hey, how's it going?

NM: Congratulations on Maloik. How important is it to see Mr. Max Cavalera back in Brazil? Talk to Wikimetal here real quick.

RB: That's what I was talking about with my buddy. Man, he's the guy. He was the first real firebrand in Brazil. He was the guy who built this, who showed us to the world and showed that distorted guitar exists in our country, you know? It was great because it satisfied the Sepultura fans, who still follow Sepultura today and follow Max in Soulfly. And that's it, that's what he said there. It was a very special day for Brazilian metal today.

NM: Tell us a little about Maloik.

RB: The program is actually my cousin Roger's idea. And I'm there to help with that aspect of the program itself.

NM: From head banger to head banger.

RB: From one headbanger to another, that's it, man.

NM: All of us headbangers are honored and happy to have a space like this, my great friend Ricardo Batalha. And damn, you guys are too, by extension, we're in this together, count on Wikimetal to always promote Maloik.

Thanks, bro.

NM: Thanks, brother. Our dear friend here, Sepultura shirt, pants just like Max's, from way back.

X: It was a tribute, man! This Believe the Remains shirt was a tribute. From Sepultura's first tour outside of Brazil, which was with Sotão in…

NM: All over Europe, right? Those guys did it, you know? They went I don't know how many days without showering, those crazy things.

X: That's it.

NM: Thanks, brother. I'm going to talk to my great friend, Mr. Guilherme Martin, Igor Cavalera's drum tech for many years. You're Igor Cavalera's drum tech until today and you were working here at the Soulfly show, what is the importance of Mr. Max Cavalera returning to play in São Paulo with his band Soulfly?

Guilherme Martin: Man, it doesn't exist. There are very few people in the rock world who can do the same thing. And Max is one of them.

NM: I agree with you. I think Max has something special; when he gets on stage, people go wild, and it's been like that since 1986. He's one of the biggest names in heavy metal in the world, right?

GM: They're in the Heavy Metal Hall of Fame. They invented a way of playing. People imitate what they do. And they can't copy it. It's Brazil, I was part of this whole story, thanks.

NM: Sensational, sensational. Guilherme Martin, my friend for over 25 years! I'll even buy you a beer.

GM: Two beers, please!

Daniel Dystyler: Well, that was Nando Machado live from Via Marques at the Soulfly show. Great coverage, makes you want to go, right Rafinha? Too bad we couldn't go.

Rafael Masini: I'm glad Nando covered it, but I wish I could have been there too. It was really cool.
