Last Saturday, November 2nd, Sleaford Mods performed in Brazil for the first time. The British duo, formed by Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn, played at the Carioca Club in São Paulo. The band's latest release was the 2023 album UK GRIM , but the show spanned their entire long career.
The show started early. At 6 PM, the Brazilian band Black Pantera took the stage while the audience was still arriving. Alternating songs from previous works with those from their new album, Perpétuo , the band entertained those who already knew them and introduced themselves to the part of the audience that was seeing them for the first time.
The band, comprised of brothers Charles Gama and Chaene de Gama and Rodrigo Pancho, , as their lyrics also address themes such as social injustice and the anti-racist struggle. With a lot of groove, the band interacted with the audience, asking people to crouch down during "Fogo Nos Racistas" (Fire on the Racists) and organizing a mosh pit during "Revolução É O Caos" (Revolution Is Chaos).
A show with British punctuality
At the scheduled time, Jason and Andrew took the stage. While Fearn laid down the beat and danced, Williamson moved and sang throughout. They performed 26 songs in less than two hours. The vast majority of them were from the cult album Divide And Exit, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2024. The audience sang along and danced to all of them, including “Air Conditioning” and “Tied Up in Nottz”.
The irreverent cover of Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls," featuring Jason's dance moves, got everyone dancing like it was the '80s. Their latest album was represented in tracks like the opening number "UK Grim," as well as "On the Ground" and "Smash Each Other Up." The show ended with "Tweet Tweet Tweet," which went viral on TikTok. From the beginning, everyone sang along to the song's beat, which continued even after the show ended.
Finally, Sleaford Mods brought their heavy sound, full of ironic and politicized lyrics, to São Paulo. The audience, even living in another country, understands well the social criticisms that the duo portrays.
