Slipknot was formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray Slipknot settled on nine members: Sid Wilson (DJ), Joey Jordison (drums), Chris Fehn (percussion), Jim Root (guitar), Craig Jones (keyboards), Mick Thomson (guitar), and Corey Taylor (vocals). With this lineup, Slipknot released their self-titled debut album in 1999.

The album Slipknot , which was released shortly after the Ozzfest where the band promoted their first two demos, received platinum certification in early 2000 and allowed Slipknot to play in several countries.

In 2001 the band released their second album, Iowa . Due to internal conflicts, Slipknot went on hiatus the following year, returning only in 2004 with the release of the album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) . The following year the band decided on a second hiatus, which was interrupted in 2008 with the release of their fourth album, All Hope Is Gone .

In 2010, during the band's third hiatus, bassist Paul Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room due to an overdose. In 2013, it was announced that drummer Joey Jordison would no longer be part of the band and was replaced by Jay Weinberg .

Slipknot is known for its image, with uniforms and masks, and its numerical nicknames. The band has sold over 20 million albums and has been nominated for seven Grammys, winning the award in 2006 for best metal performance with the song "Before I Forget".
