In an interview on an American radio program, Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis spoke about the band being labeled as a heavy metal group. See his statement:
“I’ve always had a problem with the term ‘Metal.’ We were never that. I mean, just go back to the beginning of Korn. We came from Huntington Beach in California, and they didn’t know what to do with us.”
The first tour we did was with Biohazard and House Of Pain. The second, I think, was Sick Of It All, Orange 9MM and us, and after that we went out with KMFDM. And we did shows with No Doubt, Cadillac Tramps and Pennywise, we were a perfect fit everywhere.
So I think we did all the things and the metal community kind of took us in. We were the black sheep, we had nowhere to go. And I really appreciate and love the metal community. But about being a metal band, for me a metal band is Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. That's a metal band. I don't think Korn does that. I know what we do is different, but I love the scene and there are very passionate people in it. Really heartfelt fans. They don't care, if they don't like what you're doing they tell you and I respect them for that.”
When asked how he would classify Korn, Davis replied: “I think we’re Heavy Rock. I mean, I don’t like to label anything, but we’re more Heavy Rock than Metal.”
