Mustaine in an exclusive interview with Wikimetal.
In an exclusive interview with Wikimetal, Megadeth vocalist Dave Mustaine spoke about the popularity of the metal genre. During the conversation, when asked about the end of the That Metal Show, Mustaine commented on the music industry in general. Read the statement:
“I think Metal has been one of those things that people easily dismiss. If you look at the Grammys in the US, there’s only one category for Metal music. There are probably a dozen awards for other styles, soundtracks, or other things. Only one for Metal? Come on, that’s not cool.”
And I think it's all the money's fault. You know what's at the base of the music industry and what keeps it running: the radio stations that will play the music people want to hear so they can charge more money for advertising, and the more people listen to that station, the more advertisers will want to be on that station, so they'll pay more money.
And I think for us, we've always been one of those bands that doesn't get radio play. We've always had to go to the trenches, fight for things. And I think that's why there are so many pop categories, people are fed up with it.
If metal music were popular again, would there be more categories? Of course. So I think it depends on us, the metal bands, if we're making good albums. And that's why I'm so excited that "Dystopia" turned out the way it did. We did our part.
The full interview with Dave Mustaine will be published on Wikimetal soon.
