Alice In Chains was formed in 1987 in Seattle by Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley . In 1990, the band released their first album, Facelift , with Mike Starr on bass and Sean Kinney on drums.
Although often associated with the grunge movement, having achieved commercial success during the style's peak, Alice In Chains features strong elements of heavy metal. After releasing 5 albums, Layne Staley's isolation following the death of his ex-fiancée forced the band to cease activities. In 2002, Staley was found dead in his apartment, intoxicated by a mixture of heroin and cocaine.
In 2005, the band reunited, with vocalist William DuVall replacing Staley. In 2008, DuVall became a permanent member of the band, which released the album Black Gives Way To Blue the following year. In 2011, bassist Mike Starr passed away due to an overdose of antidepressants. In 2013, with bassist Mike Inez , Alice In Chains released The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here .
With 8 Grammy nominations, Alice In Chains is considered one of the most successful bands of the 90s, selling over 25 million albums worldwide and 14 million in the United States alone.
