"Actually, there are 11 reasons to curse Nando Machado for not mentioning these bands in the previous post."
By Nando Machado
I enjoy making lists, and the best part of these lists is revising them after listening to other people's lists. As in the previous post, I decided to list 11 reasons to listen to "new" Metal bands ("new" is in quotes precisely because some aren't that new anymore).
Now, this is a list with 11 more worthwhile bands. Adding to the other 11, we have 22 new (or almost new) Metal bands worth listening to. So go to a record store or check out the iTunes store and start investing in current Metal – it's worth it!
This time I chose songs from each band to make it easier for you to get to know them. If you don't want to spend your money right now, put these names on YouTube and check out these excellent bands before deciding which one to invest in. There's music for all tastes.
Please note that there are no Brazilian bands in either post precisely because the Brazilian bands will be featured in a separate post soon.
I hope you enjoy it; there are bands from Denmark, Sweden, Spain, France, Australia, and the USA. Metal dominates the world; only those who don't want to see it can't!
Volbeat – Sad Man's Tongue – Imagine if Elvis, Roy Orbison, or Johnny Cash formed a metal band. That's the sound of Volbeat. One of the best rock bands today, I don't even know if what they do is metal or rock 'n' roll, but it's worth listening to this quartet from Copenhagen. Their sound is original and mixes a lot of styles: rockabilly, punk, and metal, without prejudice.
Chickenfoot – Big Foot – Just another super band? No, a super band that's here to stay? I hope so. Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Chad Smith seem to have a lot of fun when they're on stage, and we really hope to see this band in Brazil soon. They released their first album in 2009 and the second in 2011, which is even better than the first. If you like listening to excellent musicians and one of the best rock vocalists (and probably the best backing vocalist too, Michael Anthony), don't miss this band.
Black Country Communion – Just another supergroup? No. A supergroup that's here to stay? I hope so, the guys play amazingly, Jason Bonham, "Kicks Ass" on drums, and Glenn Hughes is one of the greatest vocalists of all time in my opinion, it's good that he recovered from drugs and alcohol. The guys are great live and released the album Live In Europe which is entirely good and shows that a real band has to be good live, that's what BCC does. Joe Bonamassa rocks on guitar and former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian completes the lineup of this amazing team. The good news is that they are already back in the studio recording a new album.
Airbourne – Blond, Bad and Beautiful – If you like AC/DC, listen to this excellent Australian band (and watch this excellent video). Do they do anything new? No. But they play Rock 'n' Roll very well and have an impeccable live performance. It would be great to see these guys in Brazil soon; they would be an excellent attraction for a festival like SWU, for example. The guys' look is very cool: walls of Marshall amps, Explorer guitars, and shirtless, long-haired guys rocking non-stop. Have you seen this movie? Me too, but it's the best movie in the world, so why not watch it again?
Wolfmother – Woman – They have a very 70s sound reminiscent of Black Sabbath with Ozzy. This Australian power trio already has two albums released and should release their third this year; we hope it's on the same level as the other two. I think this band is awesome.
Coheed And Cambria – The Suffering – Metal or Hard Rock? It doesn't matter, the guys from Coheed and Cambria make a really cool and fun sound. Unfortunately, I missed their show at Rock in Rio, but I hope they come play at a smaller venue so we can see this band perform in an indoor space. Good backing vocal melodies are the highlight of their sound, along with a rather strange and even funny visual style.
Opeth – The Grand Conjuration – Imagine a sound reminiscent of the 70s mixed with Death Metal. If you like that mix, you have to listen to this band. They play Metal heavily influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep, mixed with Death Metal. Progressive Metal with dark melodies and guttural passages complete the super original sonic mix that makes this excellent Swedish band, Opeth, so unique.
Trivium – Down From the Sky – some people call it Metalcore, I prefer to call Trivium's sound Thrash. This band is very good, they already have 5 albums released and are coming to Brazil in September opening for Dragonforce, an unmissable show at Via Marquês on the 8th and in Curitiba at Music Hall on September 9th.
Arch Enemy – Yesterday Is Dead And Gone – The band isn't exactly new, they released their first album in '96. Angela Gossow is every Death Metal fan's dream; besides being beautiful, she sings like an ogre from hell. If you like guttural vocals and well-crafted, melodic instrumentals, listen to this band and don't miss their show on November 25th at Carioca Club in São Paulo.
Angelus Apatrida – You Are Next – Excellent band from Spain, they play top-notch THRASH METAL with a capital T, they have released 6 albums and although they are not well known in Brazil, they have everything to become a hit here too. We will try to contact them soon and do a special program on Wikimetal.
Gojira – The Art of Dying – Excellent band from France. If you like labels, I'd say they're Progressive Death Metal, but listen and draw your own conclusions. Their sound is for those who like well-crafted, heavy-hitting music and guttural vocals. Their videos are also quite psychopathic; these French guys are crazy.
