Sinéad O'Connor: Cause of singer's death revealed

Irish singer passed away in July 2023 at the age of 56

The cause of death of singer Sinéad O'Connor was revealed a year after her passing.

Irish singer O'Connor died on July 26th at the age of 56, after being found unconscious in her home by police. In January of this year, coroners confirmed that O'Connor died of natural causes, but now the exact cause of her death has been revealed.

According to the Irish Independent , the death certificate (registered by her ex-husband John Reynolds ) states that O'Connor died due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

The document also stated that O'Connor had suffered from "a low-grade respiratory infection".

The Legacy of Sinéad O'Connor

O'Connor rose to fame with the hit "Nothing Compares 2 U," as well as "The Emperor's New Clothes," "Sacrifice," and "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance," but has recorded ten studio albums.

The singer also had a career marked by strong statements. The most significant of these occurred in October 1992, when she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II on stage during the American television program Saturday Night Live on NBC, as part of a political act against child abuse.

She has always spoken about issues related to human rights, racism, organized religion, and women's rights. Throughout her musical career, she has spoken about her spiritual journey, activism, socio-political views, as well as her traumas and mental health issues.

In 2017, O'Connor changed her name to Magda Davitt. After converting to Islam in 2018, she changed her name to Shuhada' Sadaqat, but continued to record and perform under her birth name.
