Garbage announced that they are in the studio recording their seventh studio album. Vocalist Shirley Manson added that the work is progressing as planned: "It should be ready by the end of May and we're on track."
Shirley spoke in a recent interview with NME about the reception of her previous album and her expectations for the next one. “I was really delighted that No Gods No Masters was received so well because we didn’t have any expectations.” She added: “Going into this next record, I feel a change. I’m trying to dampen my indignation. As a society, we’ve become very downcast and heartbroken. I’m trying to reach for something that’s a little bigger than myself, because if I don’t, I’ll drown in my own despondency.”
Shirley Manson recounts how the pain and loss of her dog inspired Garbage's next album.
In 2016, Manson fell off the stage and injured herself. After this incident, she needed to undergo hip surgery, which caused her terrible pain. In addition, she lost her dog. She and her husband had adopted her, and her death affected Manson deeply.
“I also lost my dog, which doesn’t seem like much, but it literally ruined my life,” Manson told NME. “Losing her influenced everything. Having a body that doesn’t function, losing the joy in my life, it’s been a real challenge trying to recover and not be destructive with my depression and anger. They always need to be tempered.”
Therefore, in this next album, Shirley says she is fighting to keep her heart from growing cold from so much suffering. It will be a search for light. “After burning the earth, we emerge from a filthy cave with a spotlight. We search for fragments of life and humanity,” says Manson.
