The story of Janis Joplin , one of the greatest voices in rock, is coming to the big screen. In an interview with Variety last Tuesday, the 10th, actress Shailene Woodley — known for roles in Divergent and Big Little Lies — revealed that she will play the vocalist.
The film, which is also produced by Woodley, will be shot over thirty days in Los Angeles — a city that plays a significant role in Joplin's life. The biopic received a public line of credit of approximately US$2.5 million (about R$13.9 million at the current exchange rate) to help finance the budget.
“California meant so much to Janis Joplin – whether it was the hills of San Francisco or the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage on which she explored not only the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” Shailene said in a press release.
The director's name and the expected release date have not yet been announced.
This is not the first attempt.
This isn't the first time they've considered bringing the singer's story to the big screen. In 2004, Zooey Deschanel was initially cast in the role in The Gospel According to Janis , but she ended up leaving the project. Pink replaced her, but the film was eventually cancelled.
A little later, in 2010, Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles — director of City of God — was slated to make a film about Janis, however, he said that the production had hit a "stall".
The last attempt was in 2010, and Amy Adams was chosen to play the singer in Janis: Get It While You Can , a project that never came to fruition.
