In an interview with The Sun System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian revealed plans for future band projects featuring new music.
Tankian described some of the discarded tracks produced during the three officially released albums as "gems".
“We have some unreleased material from the past that’s ready. I’ve forgotten how many songs there are, but some of them would be interesting, because I think some of them are truly incredible gems.”
According to Serj, if Daron Malakian, John Dolmayan, and Shavo Odadjian consented, the band could release the "gems"—kept in the vault—as part of a Greatest Hits album , and not as a new project.
"I would say that if System decided to record an album, it would be a fresh start in a completely new way, in a beautiful direction," he stated.
After the release of Hypnotize (2005) , the band's third and final album, artistic differences arose between Serj and Daron. This contributed to the scarcity of new projects from the quartet.
A fresh start for System Of A Down
It's not difficult for fans to get excited about Serj Tankian's statements, which this time echoed hope for a future reunion of the band with new material.
"I'm not predicting that. I definitely think we'll do something. I just don't know when," he revealed.
It's worth noting that System Of A Down has only played two shows this year, both in the United States. The main reason for these infrequent performances is Tankian's health.
With the musician's well-being and recovery in mind, following his back surgery in 2021, the band has not toured the world since 2017, when they performed at the Download Festival in the United Kingdom.
