of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian has issued a warning about a new genocide that he claims could occur in the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, located between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Throughout their career, the members of System of a Down, all of Armenian descent, have used their voices to draw attention to the 1915 genocide that exterminated approximately 1.5 million Armenians.
At the end of September, Azerbaijani forces launched an offensive in Artsakh, which remains independent and lies between the two countries.
Members of System of a Down had already issued a statement in early October, warning that Azerbaijan had broken the ceasefire agreement between the countries that had been in effect since 1994.
Since then, the confrontation has intensified, prompting Serj Tankian to speak out again Fader
“After the Nagorno-Karabakh war ended in 1994, a truce was signed and the Armenians of Artsakh were able to establish a modern, democratic republic with their own parliament. Azerbaijan has never forgiven the Armenians for winning that war.”
Tankian continues: “Since then, children in Azerbaijan have been taught in school to hate Armenians, while the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev , denies the Armenian genocide of 1915, saying it is a fantasy. It is a consensus among historians that the Ottoman Turkish Empire massacred 1.5 million Armenians and sent thousands more to seek refuge abroad.”
"Today, the Armenian people face an existential threat, as Turkey is supporting Azerbaijani forces, attacking residential areas, maternity wards, and cathedrals in the Republic of Artsakh."
Tankian said that last week the International Association of Genocide Scholars published an open letter warning that a genocide may have already begun .
In the interview, Serj Tankian also warns about the pressure in the media: “ Cardi B shared a link to the Armenia Fund , which provides humanitarian aid in Artsakh, but deleted the post after she was called a 'terrorist' on social media. The same thing happened with Elton John , who also deleted the post in which he spoke in defense of the Armenian people.”
Images from the conflict reveal that both Armenia and Azerbaijan are using a wide range of military equipment, including heavy tanks, long-range artillery, and drones.
