Musician says he's working on new material.
System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian spoke with Rolling Stone about some of his current projects, such as writing soundtracks for films, and about the band's future.
Tankian reveals that the group has been working on new material, but they are still undecided about releasing a full album. “We tried [to make a new album]. We’re discussing it and we’ve already played new songs for each other, but we haven’t yet reached a conclusion on how things should be done so that we can move forward with it. And that’s the thing.”
The musician also talks a bit about his relationship with the other band members: “It’s funny. When people don’t see an album coming out, they automatically assume the worst possible thing about the band’s relationship. But the truth is we’re best friends – at least I have best friendships with everyone in the band. John [Dolmayan] is my brother-in-law, he’s my family. We have a lot of fun on the road.”
But sometimes making an album is different in the minds of four different people, and things don't always fit together. Happily or unhappily, as you prefer, that's the truth. But going on tour is easy because you've already written all those songs. You have fun, and that's it.”
Meanwhile, Tankian has been working on his own music. “I have several songs ready. I’m trying to decide what to do with them (laughs). Maybe I’ll do an EP or something like that. I really enjoy being with my family, and when you release a full album with the band, you need to dedicate a few years of your life to promoting it. I don’t want to do that now.”
He goes on to say that doing interviews about the soundtracks he's composing is easy, but dedicating years to a single project is difficult. The vocalist also reveals that in the future he may release an EP on streaming services with some solo songs.
