Serj Tankian became "emotionally" detached on the last System Of A Down albums.

“I needed oxygen – I felt like there was too much going on,” explains the vocalist.

Serj Tankian reveals he "emotionally disconnected" while making the last System Of A Down .

The revelation was given in an interview with Metal Hammer , via Louder Sound . Tankian says he became “passive” while working on the albums Mezmerize (2005) and Hypnotize (2005).

The vocalist recalls what he felt during the production of the albums, saying that he had "a unique relationship to a certain extent" with them, since he had "emotionally detached" himself from both the band and the albums.

“Because of the back and forth, I became quite passive. There was music I wanted to bring that I felt I couldn’t… I was in a strange position,” Tankian continues, admitting he needed “oxygen,” feeling that “there was too much going on.”

A few months after recording the albums, the band went on hiatus. They reunited in 2011, but haven't recorded any new albums since then. The only release was the double-sided single Protect The Land / Genocidal Humanoidz (2020).

Serj, in an interview with The Jesse Lee Show , spoke about what would lead him to record another album with SOAD .
