Serj Tankian and John Dolmayan have major ideological differences. Despite the political clashes between the musicians, the vocalist would not like to change the dynamic between the two in System of a Down .
Besides being bandmates, the two are also brothers-in-law, as Tankian is married to the drummer's partner's sister. Despite the challenges of living together and the singer's confessed frustration when it comes to American politics, they both agree when discussing Armenia.
“The political differences between John and me became pronounced in the last year during Trump , but it’s a new phenomenon,” Tankian told NME . “Find someone who doesn’t have a brother-in-law with a different political view and you’ll find an interesting family. Some of the bands that create the most elastic and interesting music are those with very interesting dynamics between the members; I wouldn’t change that.”
In February, the band returned after 15 years with "Genocidal Humanoidz ," a track in support of Armenian soldiers wounded in the conflicts with Turkey and Azerbaijan over the Artsakh region.
