Sebastian Bach chose the city of São Paulo as the most memorable of all the cities he has toured, because it was the stage for two remarkable shows – for very different reasons: first, the worst of his career, responsible for breaking up Skid Row , and then the best of all.
Asked on Twitter to choose three memorable cities, Bach decided to mention only the Brazilian one. "Because the worst show I ever did was there and the best show I ever did was there," he wrote.
The worst experience was at the Monsters of Rock in 1996, when Skid Row performed between Motörhead and Iron Maiden , at the time with Blaze Bayley on vocals. The audience reacted with hostility from the first song, throwing items at the band's vocalist and not missing any opportunity to boo.
That trip to Brazil marked Bach's departure from Skid Row. "[The show] broke up the band, it was so bad. The only show we did together was the following night in Rio, and that was it," the singer explained. "The next time I played in São Paulo, the audience knew I had broken up the band and welcomed me with open arms.".
Bach's return to Brazil happened only 14 years later, when he opened for Guns N' Roses in 2010. The visit was successful and resulted in the best show of the singer's career, this time as a solo artist.
“When I returned, I didn’t know what to expect from São Paulo. But when I went on stage, the audience’s reaction was very impressive, it was as if all the fans were telling me: ‘We love you, man! We’re so sorry about the 1996 show, we’re true rock and roll fans, welcome back!’”, he told G1 in 2012. “It was the best show of my life! The best I’ve ever done.”
