The city of Seattle created a day to celebrate the legacy of the vocalist.
The late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley would have turned 52 last Thursday, the 22nd, and to celebrate his legacy, the mayor of Seattle declared August 22nd officially Layne Staley Day.
The American city served as the birthplace of grunge and had already honored the musician with the creation of the Layne Staley Memorial Fund , established to support Seattle residents struggling with substance abuse.
"The city celebrates Layne's art and the promotion of the arts in Seattle as we work toward a more vibrant, healthy, and safe city," the city hall statement said.
Staley died at the age of 34 on April 5, 2002, from a speedball overdose, a mixture of heroin and cocaine. On the same date, eight years earlier, Kurt Cobain died after shooting himself in the head.
