Rock music was the backdrop for the most-watched series released by Netflix, the largest streaming service, in 2022. In the middle of the year, Metallica took off among younger viewers when the character Eddie Munson , from the fourth season of Stranger Things, played the title track from the album Master of Puppets (1986).

Furthermore, Wednesday , set to The Cramps ' "Goo Goo Muck," went viral on social media, with many people attempting the eccentric steps of the Addams Family member, played by actress Jenna Ortega . By December, TikTok videos of the challenge had already accumulated nearly 15 billion views.

In terms of success, it was reminiscent of the theme song from Pulp Fiction , by one of the greatest guitarists in rock history, Dick Dale , the father of surf music. He wrote "Misirlou," which was featured in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film .

But rock also suffered great losses in 2022. Unfortunately, with the advancing age of our heroes, in their 70s and 80s, as was the case with Erasmo Carlos . A pioneer of what we understand as Brazilian rock, he has, for example, the masterpiece "Carlos, Erasmo" from 1971. But there were also younger people who passed away, such as Taylor Hawkins, drummer of the band Foo Fighters for 25 years, at only 50 years old.

The year, however, had a lively second half in every sense – with the most hotly contested election of all time, the World Cup in a new and controversial country, Qatar, and, in rock music, one of the biggest music festivals on the planet, Rock in Rio.

Truly, and for some editions now, it has consolidated itself as a music festival of all styles, concentrating rock and metal for brief performances over one or two days. So, should Rock in Rio change its name? This debate comes up with each edition, but the organization shrugs it off and the event has continued to grow stronger , post-control of the biggest pandemic of all time.

In any case, rock was in the spotlight with Iron Maiden as the headliner, and also Green Day , who also put on a great show, Guns N' Roses , Coldplay , the young guys from Maneskin , Billy Idol , who even slipped up a bit, Brazilian bands like Capital Inicial , and so on.

KISS also announced: “This is the last time we’ll be playing live, okay?” But , trick question! Luckily for us, they’ll be back in 2023 at Monster of Rock , which could be the main event for veterans and new fans of the genre. It was also announced last year: lots of great rock at Summer Breeze Brazil , just a week later, with younger, but no less gigantic bands like Parkway Drive, Avantasia , and Stone Temple Pilots.

And in Brazil, the great expectation is to see all the Titãs together again after 30 years . Obviously, without the beloved and missed Marcelo Fromer , who will be replaced by Liminha , the same Liminha who produced most of the great rock records of the 80s that we are used to hearing. We just hope it's Titãs, being Titãs! A real hard-hitting, " (Dinosaur Head) show! No ballad-filled shows like they did at one time.

And more was announced: The Town event, similar to Rock in Rio , in September, the Iron Maiden legend Paul Di'Anno , Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe , and the Australian rock band Hoodoo Gurus . And so, rock is not dead yet, it continues to live on in various styles and generations in 2022, 2023… Long live rock!
