The resignation would happen in 1986
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has confirmed rumors that Metallica intended to fire their drummer Lars Ulrich after the 1986 tour. The story was described in Ian's autobiographical book, released yesterday, the 14th, in the United States.
Scott explains that the band had revealed their intentions during what would be Cliff Burton's last tour: “They had planned a change, and they wanted a new drummer. We were all very surprised by this, because they were a quartet. They said, 'When we finish this tour we're going to find another drummer.'”
In an interview about the book for a Colorado radio station, Ian continues: “What could I do? As a friend of the band, I felt bad for Lars, but at the same time I hoped they would overcome it and continue as they wanted. Obviously, in the end, things were different, and Metallica became one of the biggest bands in the world.”
The story of Lars' possible dismissal had already been revealed by Dave Mustaine in 2009, who told Rolling Stone magazine about Scott Ian's account. Although he never denied it, in his autobiography, Ian speaks out about the story for the first time.
