In an interview with Guitar World , Anthrax co-founder Scott Ian revealed the behind-the-scenes story of how the band was chosen to be part of the lineup for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne last historic , all thanks to Tom Morello .
Ian commented that he heard about the event through Morello: “I replied to his message and said, ‘Dude, yeah! Whatever it is, I’m in’… Tom replied that as soon as he had more information about the music and who I’m going to play with, he would let me know. Then he added: ‘We’re just starting to organize this now. Sharon [ Osbourne ] asked me to be the creative director and help put everything together.’”
And although Ian was initially scheduled to participate in a jam session with several stars, he was surprised to realize that it wasn't just Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath performing, but a heavyweight lineup with some of the biggest names in the genre.
"How about putting Anthrax on this show? I'm not the only Sabbath fan in the band!"
The guitarist continues: “A few days later, he sent me a list of the people involved, and then I saw that there were other bands participating. I thought, 'Great,' because I had no idea; I thought it would just be Sabbath and Ozzy, and a bunch of star lineups. I saw other bands, but nothing from Anthrax, so I said, 'How about putting Anthrax in there? I'm not the only Sabbath fan in the band!' Tom said, 'Let me answer you right now…' Literally, about five minutes later, he came back and said, 'You guys are in.'”.
In addition to the Anthrax show, the guitarist said he will be making some guest appearances at the Black Sabbath show: “I’m also on some other Sabbath songs, in one of the star-studded lineups I’m part of. I have no idea how the production side of things is working. There are apparently going to be about 200 things happening before Sabbath goes on stage, but that’s not something I need to worry about. I just need to know the songs.”
