Klaus Meine, lead singer of Scorpions , spoke about his decision to change the lyrics of the classic song "Wind Of Change," but stressed that Scorpions is not a political band.
"Wind Of Change" is an anti-war song that the German rock band released after performing at the Moscow Music Peace Festival in 1989. However, the band altered the lyrics, which now read: "Now listen to my heart / It says Ukraine / Waiting for the wind to change." The new lyrics premiered in March 2022, at the opening show of the Sin City Nights at the Zappos Theater in the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
In an interview with 89 Rádio Rock , Klaus Meine spoke about the track [transcription via Blabbermouth ]:
“Well, basically we’re not a political band, but Scorpions has always been a band that builds bridges between cultures, between countries. And maybe that’s because we grew up in the shadow of the Berlin Wall, we grew up during the Cold War. We always wanted to unite people with music in a peaceful way. So, yes, I changed the lyrics a few years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine, and turned it into a statement, an act of solidarity with Ukraine.”
In 2015, guitarist Rudolf Schenker spoke about the inspiration for the original version of
"Wind Of Change":
“We wanted to show the public in Russia that a new generation of Germans is emerging. They are not coming with tanks and weapons to wage war — they are coming with guitars and rock 'n' roll and bringing love!”
