Saxon is coming to Brazil for a single show on May 3rd
Just before landing in Brazil for a single show promoting their latest album, Thunderbolt , we spoke with Biff Byford, vocalist and founder of Saxon .
Icons of traditional Heavy Metal, Saxon was part of one of the most famous 'movements' in heavy music: A New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, between the 70s and 80s, along with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Grim Reaper, Tokyo Blade and many others. Saxon was formed in 1976, under the name Son Of A Bitch , and Biff spoke about the secret to keeping a band going for so many years : “Keep making new albums, new tours. Keep writing good songs on each album. I think that's what keeps [a band] going.”
“[A New Wave Of British Heavy Metal] was fantastic! Bands like Saxon, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard… It was a really great time to be alive in the 80s, definitely. The English scene is currently very good for Saxon. We have sold-out shows, we'll be doing more shows in October. Everything is going very well at the moment.” Asked about essential albums from that era, Biff listed five: “Saxon, Wheels Of Steel, Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast, Motörhead Whitesnake 's first album … I can't remember now [Trouble, from 1978], it's a great album. Def Leppard, On Through The Night. I think those are very important albums from that time.”
In Thunderbolt , an album released in February of this year, Saxon maintains its roots in traditional Heavy Metal. “They Played Rock N' Roll,” a song dedicated to Lemmy Kilmister and his band, Motörhead , features a guest appearance by Johan Hegg, famous for his powerful guttural vocals in Amon Amarth. “Lemmy was one of my best friends. We toured together in '79, the first tour we did together, and then we played many, many times. It was a good thing to do, to celebrate his music.” There's also a special guest appearance by Johan Hegg, famous for his powerful guttural vocals in Amon Amarth , on the song “Predator.” “I saw the song with an extreme voice! It would be cool to have someone singing like that on the song, so I sent it to him and he loved it. I think it turned out interesting, and it's also good for an older band to have someone from a newer band participate. It turned out well!”
“There are many songs that I enjoy singing live, 'Nosferatu' from the new album is really cool. 'The Secret Of Flight' [also from the new album] is a difficult song to sing, and it's great.”
Biff is preparing a solo album, which will feature special guests. "It should be released in 2019. Stay tuned! It's going to be something like Saxon, it's going to be really good .
Saxon will play a single show in Brazil, in São Paulo, on May 3rd. “It’s the same show we’re doing in other countries. It will be a really long show and it’s going to be great! We always remember Brazil and South America. The fans are very, very passionate, especially in Brazil. It’s always a special moment to play in Brazil. It’s going to be great!”
