Sammy Hagar detailed to the Los Angeles Times how the process of reconciliation with Eddie Van Halen before the guitarist passed away in October 2020. According to the vocalist, comedian George Lopez played an essential role in the process.
In the same conversation [via Blabbermouth ], Hagar says he misses the guitarist “a lot” and that the reconciliation was “very important” to him.
“I miss him terribly. Thank God we reconnected near the end, otherwise I would be heartbroken. Anyway, I feel that way. But what happened that year was very important to me. Eddie had told me not to tell anyone about our reconciliation, as he wasn't interested in answering questions about reunion rumors.”
Hagar also revealed that Eddie had in mind to get everyone together "to make some noise." This would have been done if the guitarist had completed his treatment.
He replied, "Please don't talk to anyone, not even Al [ Alex Van Halen ]. I've never told anyone this, and I bet Al will have a fit. But Eddie said, 'Don't even talk to him about it.' I said, 'Ed, we don't talk.'"
For Sammy Hagar, things haven't been the same since Eddie Van Halen left.
“But in my heart, I hoped he would recover and become the musician I loved and knew from when he was in the band. I rooted for that to happen and for us to get together to play someday.”
“That was the peak of my career. But, more than that, it was the creativity and energy we had together composing songs like “Right Now”, “When It's Love”, “Love Walks In” and “Top Of The World”. He brought out something in me that simply isn't the same without his presence.”
"At my age, you stop and think: if Ed were alive, could I achieve this again? Now that dream is gone."
