In a post on his Instagram profile at the end of December, Sammy Hagar published a photo from 1991 alongside Eddie Van Halen .
Hagar's attitude came as a criticism of Alex Van Halen , who in his memoir, released last October, skipped over the "Van Hagar" era ( via NME ).
The book, titled Brothers , details the first 12 years of Van Halen , whose story ends before David Lee Roth . Besides Hagar, the lineup with Gary Cherone and the reunion with Roth are also left out.
In the post, a fan commented that: “most purists believe that [Van Halen] ended with [David Lee Roth].” The vocalist responds to the fan saying that it could indeed have ended, but instead, “we sold over 50 million records for [a] number 1 album [then] sold out every arena and stadium in the world for an entire decade.”
Hagar went on to say that Alex “isn’t doing justice” to Eddie’s musical legacy, since the drummer doesn’t acknowledge “all the number 1 albums and some great songs that Eddie and I wrote together.” For him, the omission of the period from 1985 to 1996 is a “blasphemy against his brother’s musicality, songwriting, and legacy.”
Despite the criticism, Hagar wants to make peace with Alex.
However, in an interview with Rolling Stone in November, Sammy revealed that he hopes to one day make peace with the drummer.
“It’s on my bucket list that I won’t take to my grave, and I don’t want Al to take it to his grave… I understand he probably couldn’t fit all the eras into a single book. It would have been the Bible, the dictionary, so maybe he has plans for a volume 2. Who knows?”
The vocalist also commented that he "wants to be friends" again, but doesn't want to play in a band alongside Alex.
