Roger Waters participated last Monday, the 2nd, in a demonstration in support of Julian Assange , the founder of Wikileaks who is imprisoned in London.
“We are with you. Free Julian Assange,” the musician told nearly 500 people in front of the immigration and security office. Then, the former Pink Floyd played the group's classic “Wish You Were Here.”
“How can we put ourselves in the place of Julian Assange and his confinement in solitary confinement, or that child in Syria or Palestine or Rohingya being blown to pieces by people who are in this building here? That’s called empathy, and it’s the most valuable thing a human being can have in their life.”
In 2010, Sweden issued an arrest warrant for journalist Assange on suspicion of assault and rape against a woman. The Wikileaks denied the charges. The journalist surrendered to British police in 2010 and was detained for ten days, being released on bail. Two years later he fled and sought political asylum in Ecuador.
The journalist lived in the British embassy in the country until early 2019, when he was arrested by UK authorities. Today he is in London, where the demonstration took place. See below for Maíra Watanabe for Wikimetal .
