Roger Waters kicked off his Brazilian tour, Us + Them, last Tuesday, the 9th, playing to a packed Allianz Parque. A show that transcended the artistic realm and reached the level of an ultra-sensory experience.
Behind the flawless band (with special mention to guitarist Jonathan Wilson and backing vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig , from Lucius ), was a giant screen illustrating the history of the songs, including a few solo pieces and a showcase of Pink Floyd . The narrative told, as expected, was purely political.
In “Another Brick In The Wall,” he called on children from São Paulo to position themselves on stage as if they were hostages of the Islamic State; during “Pigs,” the image of Donald Trump was satirized in various ways on the screen, a manifestation that culminated in the projection of a list of names of “neo-fascists,” which included Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) as a representative of the movement in Brazil.
The #EleNão (Not Him) campaign, opposing the candidate, was also projected and divided the audience, which largely seemed disappointed with Waters' stance – despite him never having hidden his political opinions during his decades-long career.
The tour continues this Wednesday, the 10th, in São Paulo and then travels to Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre until October 30th. Tickets are on sale at the Tickets For Fun .
