In support of the organization Rage Against the War Machine , Roger Waters published a speech on his social media calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
In an 8-minute video, the former Pink Floyd spoke out once again about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, this time addressing Presidents Joe Biden (USA) and Volodymyr Zelensky (UAE), and claiming to speak "on behalf of the majority who have no voice."
Addressing the current President of the United States, Roger Waters declared: “I’m not making excuses for Putin , but looking quickly at the history of the last 30 years, you could have done better.” The musician then listed a series of US actions over the years that he claimed led to the start of the war – among them, NATO's advance into territory closer to the Russian border.
Waters also accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of using the Minsk agreement as a political platform to get elected and then acting in the opposite way. The Minsk agreement was a treaty signed in 2014 aimed at ending the conflicts in Eastern Europe.
In addition to his appeals, Roger Waters also accused the American government of blowing up the Nord Stream pipeline, which is the main gas supply pipeline from Russia to Europe. Waters' accusations were based on an article by journalist Seymour Hersh , but no concrete evidence has yet been found to support this theory. "If this is true, it represents a blatant act of war and an extreme act of terrorism," said the musician.
“Enough is enough. We demand change. Do the right thing. Implement a ceasefire in Ukraine today,” Roger Waters declared at the end of his speech. He also mentioned John Lennon as a way to evoke an image of peace and relief with the end of the war.
Imagine the collective sigh of relief around the world, the outpouring of joy, the international union of voices in harmony singing a hymn to peace. Imagine John Lennon punching the air with his fist from beyond the grave. You have finally been heard in the corridors of power.
Roger Waters has remained active in his protests against the war in Ukraine, although his opinions have been considered somewhat controversial, as he accuses the country of having "provoked" the Russian invasion. Recently, the artist spoke at the UN at Russia's request , also calling for a ceasefire, and emphasizing that, although the invasion was an illegal act, it "did not happen without provocation."
