Can musical taste indicate someone's intelligence? According to a recently published scientific article, the answer is yes – and people with higher IQs prefer rock and heavy metal, according to the study's results.
The article “The Musical Style of Intelligent People,” written by Dr. Fabiano de Abreu Agrela, PhD in neuroscience, and Roselene Espírito Santo Wagner, PhD in neuroscience and PhD in psychology, was published by the Multidisciplinary Journal of Latin American Science, and concluded that IQ is an important factor in determining an individual's musical taste, although factors such as personal experiences and environmental influence are relevant in shaping each person's preferences.
To arrive at this result, 50 volunteers considered intelligent, according to evidence evaluated in IQ (intelligence quotient) tests, were interviewed.
In conclusion, the article states, "it was possible to confirm that most individuals with high IQs prefer rock, followed by heavy metal, as their musical style, and classical or instrumental music for concentrating on their studies."
