The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has received much criticism, especially in recent years, as it has inducted artists from the rap and pop genres.
Because of these decisions, many began to question the validity of the Hall's title, given the broader scope of artist representation. In a conversation with Joe Rock of Long Island's WBAB radio, Rock Hall president and CEO Greg Harris addressed this same concern.
When Joe asked what the CEO would say to those suggesting a name change, more specifically to Music Hall of Fame , he said: “I think to get to the heart of it. People like things that are closest to them, and I think they need to broaden their thinking about rock 'n' roll. It's a big umbrella.”
“I think people need to broaden their concept of rock 'n' roll. It's one big tent. Rock 'n' roll was never just four skinny guys with long hair and guitars; it's always been something diverse… We use this interpretation, that these are all variants of rock 'n' roll. And I think, underneath all that, the issue always comes down to hip-hop because some people aren't fans,” Harris said. “It's one big tent and everyone fits into it. It's an attitude, a spirit, and that's rock 'n' roll.”
One of the biggest concerns, especially among fans of heavier music, is the lack of representation of metal artists. Some metal favorites, such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden , have been overlooked in recent years.
As in his recent comments, Harris emphasized the importance of nominating metal bands. He reiterates that a large number of nominated artists eventually make it in (80%), even if not on the first try.
“There’s no doubt that [Iron Maiden] is an impactful and influential band, which is why they were nominated this year, along with 15 other artists. When the votes came in, six others were leading. I’m not questioning it, they are an important band, they are important and influential,” Harris said.
The CEO further added that everyone has their favorites, which bring personal impact. Therefore, just as fans of the band will look at the list of finalists and be disappointed, others will celebrate. It's a matter of preference.
