Is it possible to separate the art from the artist? There are no simple answers when an artist displays problematic behavior, but when it comes to metalheads, more than half can't make that separation.

That was the conclusion of a study conducted by TickPick , shared by MetalSucks , which surveyed over a thousand music fans in the United States, classifying results by age categories and favorite musical genre.

In general, two out of three fans believe that making this separation is impossible – and more than half of those surveyed stopped listening to an artist in 2021 because of some controversial behavior.

The results among metalheads and rock fans are similar: 62% of heavy metal fans surveyed agree that it is impossible to separate the art from the artist, placing two metal musicians among those who lost the most fans in 2021. In the case of rock fans, the percentage is 61%. Those least inclined to agree are grunge and indie rock fans, with 58% and 52%, respectively.

Returning to the overall results, the majority of the public disagrees with cancel culture. Still, 42% of those surveyed believe it's important to stop supporting musicians with problematic statements or attitudes, while 51% consider it depends on the situation.
