In an interview with Drum! magazine, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo spoke about Lars Ulrich's technical skills, which are frequently criticized by the public. Trujillo defended the musician, saying that the great drum masters have great respect for him:
“I’ve played with some of the best drummers in rock, from Josh Freese to Brooks Wackerman, to Dave Lombardo. And those guys respect Lars. They know he has a unique style of playing and producing. Some drummers who don’t have the same success as Lars criticize him unfairly. I don’t know if it’s envy or something like that. But the real great drummers have a lot of respect for him.”
Mike Portnoy comments on Lars Ulrich's technical ability
Since I joined the band, Lars has only gotten better. I feel his ability to create grooves has grown a lot on the new album. We're growing as a rhythm section. That's really beautiful because I feel the band as a whole continues to challenge itself.”
