Robert Plant possesses an enviable vocal range that gave Led Zeppelin a unique and easily recognizable sound. Even with so much experience and technique, some songs manage to challenge even the singer.

In a new episode of the Digging Deep , Plant pointed out that he's the same "guy who sang 'Immigrant Song'," but still encountered challenges singing a cover of "Polly" by the country rock duo Dillard & Clark . The track was released on the album Raising Sand (2007), a collaboration between Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, under the name "Polly Come Home".

“It’s simply the most difficult piece of music to sing at the tempo we chose. It’s one of the hardest performances I’ve ever had, apart from my audition with the Yardbirds ,” he commented about the band that would become Led Zeppelin (via Ultimate Classic Rock ). “The music itself is so moving and so slow.”

The difficulty lay in the meter of the verses, as he explained. “So, right from the opening line of the song, in my chest, my lungs, my vocal cords, my sense of timing… [The thought] was: 'How am I going to put these words at the end of the bar without it falling apart?' It's a very beautiful melody,” he said.
