Robert Hunter , composer and friend of the Grateful Dead , passed away this Monday, the 23rd, at the age of 78. The news was confirmed by the writer and poet's family, who did not reveal the cause of death.
"It is with great sadness that we confirm that our beloved Robert passed away last night. He died peacefully in his bed, surrounded by love. His wife, Maureen , was by his side, holding his hand."
The family also sent a message to the artist's fans: "Rest assured and know that his words are all around us, he will never truly leave. In this moment of grief, please celebrate him in the way you all know how, stay together and listen to music. Let the songs fill the air.".
Hunter is considered one of rock's most admirable lyricists and poets. In 1961 he met Jerry Garcia, vocalist of the Grateful Dead, and their friendship became a lifelong one, resulting in classics such as "Dark Star," "Uncle John's Band," "Box of Rain," and more.
After Garcia's death in 1995, the writer went to work with musicians Elvis Costello , Bruce Hornsby , Jim Lauderdale , and Mickey Hart . He also composed several songs alongside Bob Dylan , another admired songwriter in the genre. Together, they created the album Together Through Life (2009).
Robert Hunter also worked on some of his own music and in 2013 went on a solo tour to pay for the medication he needed for his already failing health.
Rest in peace, Robert Hunter.
