Rob Halford , vocalist of Judas Priest , is among the rock and metal icons celebrating years of sobriety after dealing with the ill effects of alcoholism and drug abuse.
On Thursday, June 6th, Halford celebrated 36 years of sobriety and told the Mariskal Rock website about the challenges of the journey. “I think about [drinking] all the time. It’s an addiction. When I’m watching the Arizona Cardinals game on TV, there are several commercials for beer and alcoholic beverages. I know they’re there and it’s a temptation,” he said (via Blabbermouth ).
In the musician's view, the secret is "having the mental tools ready" to overcome these moments. "I live one day at a time. And I've done that for 35 years so far. That's what matters, the moment. You live in the moment – you don't live in yesterday or tomorrow, it's now. And you need to be ready for when that little devil of a beer is on your shoulder and says, 'Come on, Rob. Have a beer.' [The response is] 'Go f**k yourself,'" Halford continued humorously. "Because I don't want to feel that way again, I don't want to be that person. I was miserable, I wasn't happy. I was bad to people. I don't want to go through that again. So that's part of finding balance in my daily life."
