Rob Halford, lead singer of Judas Priest, spoke openly about his faith in an interview with WCNC .
The vocalist once again commented on his journey, as recounted in his official biography Confess , attributing his recovery to his belief in a higher power.
“I reached a point in my life, which I discuss in my autobiography, Confess , where, being an alcoholic or drug addict, you are faced with a choice. Either you surrender everything to someone greater than yourself and begin to work daily to maintain sobriety, along with spiritual connection. That is very important.”
Rob continued: “I’ve always been a person of faith, since I was a child. But when I got clean and sober, 38, 39 years ago, it became very, very vital to me. It’s part of my daily affirmations. I start the day with a prayer and I end the day with a prayer. And this image of how you choose a higher power is entirely in your hands. That’s what I love about the work we do of supporting each other in a 24-hour daily cycle.”
“Your spiritual object can be anything. If you want a physical, tangible object, it can be anything. For me, it’s my heavy metal cactus in the pool. I don’t go up to the cactus and pray, but when I look at it, it creates a connection for me. And that’s a very important part of my daily life for maintaining my sobriety every day. I can’t do it alone. I know I have something that’s there with me now, that there’s a presence that’s there with me.”
Rob Halford and the power of prayer.
Rob is a very religious person, which might be controversial, since he leads a heavy metal band with all the stereotypes associated with it.
“I simply love the idea of prayer. Some people look at it and wonder, ‘Well, what does it do?’ Well, try it. What do you have to lose? Prayer and faith can bring wonderful peace to your life. They can work miracles.”
“So, this is just another facet of what keeps me balanced and in harmony, whereas before I was very fragmented, disjointed, and disconnected, with shards of glass everywhere. Now I see much more clearly—my conscious flow is more fluid. There’s nothing interrupting it with a substance or chemical. The clarity is great for me as a creative person. And all of this combined makes my daily life a good experience to feel and to be a part of.”
