Compiling their recent list of the 100 best heavy metal albums of all time, Rolling Stone magazine asked Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford to help by listing his 10 favorite albums in the genre. Rob Halford replied as follows:
10. Motörhead, 'Ace of Spades' (1980) – This is a bombastic hardcore 'fuck you' roar.
9. Slipknot, 'Slipknot' (1999) – When this was released, it created a new wave of nu-metal unleashing rage.
8. Emperor, 'Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk' (1997) – I love this album because it's a sonic blasphemy of the dark side.
7. Dio, 'Holy Diver' (1983) – This album has a classic groove, energy, and melodies supporting the king.
6. Pantera, 'Cowboys From Hell' (1990) – The Texas massacre started with this one.
5. Slayer, 'Reign in Blood' (1986) – It's a deadly assault of riffs and lyrics in your face.
4. Iron Maiden, 'Iron Maiden' (1980) – This felt like fresh blood from the UK in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and it was the best it could get.
3. Korn, 'Korn' (1994) – On their debut album, Korn brought a new definition of Metal that changed everything.
2. Metallica, 'Kill 'Em All' (1983) – This was maximum Thrash energy that dominated the United States.
1. Black Sabbath, 'Black Sabbath' (1970) – This is the landmark that symbolizes all of Metal.
