"Homophobia still exists today," said the Judas Priest vocalist
Rob Halford , the vocalist for Judas Priest , spoke about the homophobia he experienced when he came out as gay in the 1990s.
Halford was asked if he was afraid of losing fans after coming out. “Oh, yes. Absolutely,” he replied. “I was surrounded by homophobia, which still exists today. There are places I can’t go back to or I’ll be stoned to death.”
“When I came out, I realized I was trapped in this trap that gay people always find themselves in. It’s the fact that you’re living your life for everyone else but yourself. Between the 70s and 80s, it was extremely difficult.”
Halford continued: “I love Priest more than anything. So, even though it’s always on my mind – and I have to find a careful way to say this – it’s not important to the music. Although I would say that a straight man can’t do my job. That’s how I see it.”.
