Rob Halford , vocalist of Judas Priest , revealed that in the future he may record an album of covers of Tony Bennett , an icon of jazz and traditional American music. The idea reportedly arose spontaneously and, although there are no concrete plans yet, the project is being considered by the singer.
In an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock , the Metal God recounted that one day he sang Bennett's songs in the shower and was surprised by the result. The Briton also stated that he was saddened by Bennett's passing in 2023 and considers him an icon.
“There are so many musical things I want to do. I was singing Tony Bennett in the shower the other day, I heard my voice and thought, ‘Could I consider something like that?’ Then I think, ‘I’m an old man; I can do whatever I want!’ I love Tony Bennett; I was sad, like many of us, when he passed away. He was an icon and a beacon,” he declared [transcription via NME ].
According to Rob Halford, the album of Tony Bennett covers is still in the planning stages. The vocalist emphasized that he would like to record the project, but doesn't know how to make it happen. Halford also commented that he wouldn't have had the courage to do something like that in the past.
I love all kinds of singers. My love for what the voice can do always attracts me so much, the ideas, the imagination, in the same way that [Lady] Gaga does in Vegas in her jazz shows. But, yes, I would love to do that. I don't know how, but I better hurry if I'm going to do something like that. I would never have had the courage to do that before,” she concluded.
