Jay Buchanan and Scott Holiday of Rival Sons compared writing to planting
Jay Buchanan and Scott Holiday , vocalist and guitarist of Rival Sons , spoke about writing their new album . The interview was given to the program Box of Rock .
The band gathered in a swampy region of Tennessee to write Feral Roots . “We made campfires near a lake and drove cars on unpaved roads. We wrote, cooked, and wrote some more. Then, several ideas emerged,” Buchanan recounted. “Then we went back home and created several more songs.”
“We are different people who create different things. Then we put it all together until we felt we had the best we could do,” he added.
“We didn’t want to repeat what we’d already done. We listened to the old songs and thought, ‘we went right, now we have to go left.’ If we don’t do that, things become predictable. I don’t mean boring, but that’s not how we do it. We always try different things,” Holiday continued.
“There’s not much calculation involved. It’s much more about what feels natural. You have to break new ground. Dig into what we are artistically as a band. Discover what our ethos and our identity are. It’s like planting. You plant corn on a few acres one year. The next year you don’t want to plant corn anymore. You need to switch and constantly find new soils. We try to figure out how to stay true to ourselves and maintain authenticity,” said Jay Buchanan.
