Singer Rita Lee , known as the "queen of Brazilian rock" and one of the most influential figures in the country's musical culture, has been honored with May 22nd
The São Paulo City Council approved Law No. 18,151, of July 2nd, published in the Official Gazette, which establishes Rita Lee Day. However, the project is by councilman Celso Gianazzi of the PSOL party.
Choosing the date
Although Rita was born on December 31st, she began celebrating her birthday on the chosen date because, according to her, her birthdate wasn't just for her to celebrate, referring to the festivities and excitement of the New Year. However, Lee wanted exclusivity on a date that would give her prominence and a moment just for herself.
In 2020, the singer gave an interview to the Globo network's Fantástico program and explained more about:
“I was born on December 31st, the last day of the year, and I never had a party of my own. It’s always: ‘Today the party is yours, today the party is ours, it’s for whoever wants it.’ Not a party just for me. So, I chose May 22nd to celebrate my birthday, which is the day of Saint Rita of Cascia.”
Rita Lee passed away on May 8, 2023 , at the age of 75. She had been battling lung cancer since 2021.
