During an interview with Rolling Stone , Ringo Starr recalled what it was like when he found out about the death of his friend and fellow Beatles , John Lennon . The musician was murdered by Mark Chapman on December 8, 1980.
Starr was interviewed by drummer and vocalist Dave Grohl and commented: “When John passed away, I was in the Bahamas. I received a phone call from my stepchildren in Los Angeles saying, 'Something happened to John'.”
“And then they called and said, ‘John is dead.’ And I didn’t know what to do. I said, ‘We have to get on a plane.’ We got on a plane to New York. In those moments, you don’t know what to do.”
He also recounted that when he arrived at Lennon's apartment, he asked Yoko Ono what he could do to help: "You play with Sean [Lennon, John's son]. Keep Sean busy."
Speaking about his version of John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me," which he recorded for his solo album What's My Name?, he revealed:
I love John and… I decided I love this song, so I started producing it. I thought, 'Well, the only bassist I'd need on this track would be Paul [McCartney] .' When Jack [ Douglas , producer] started doing the string parts, I heard references to George [Harrison] . So, in a strange way, we're all there. It made me feel good.”
