Richie Faulkner , guitarist for Judas Priest , spoke again about the influence and legacy of KK Downing on the band. In an interview with Andrés Durán of El Expreso Del Rock , the musician emphasized that, despite occupying the position left by the legendary guitarist, it will never be possible to completely replace him.

“You can never replace someone like KK Downing. He was part of the soul of the band and helped define the characteristic sound of Judas Priest,” said Faulkner. “What I can do is pay tribute to the incredible work he did and bring my own energy to the group.”

Since joining the band in 2011, Richie Faulkner has been a key figure in the revitalization of Judas Priest, participating in the albums Redeemer of Souls (2014), Firepower (2018), and the recently released Invincible Shield (2024). Regarding adapting to the band's classic sound, the guitarist explained: “I grew up listening to Judas Priest, so those influences are already part of my musical DNA. My goal has always been to respect what was done before me, but also to bring something new to the fans.”

KK Downing left Judas Priest in 2011 after more than 40 years with the band and was replaced by Faulkner. Despite his turbulent departure, the former guitarist reunited with the band for a special performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Richie Faulkner commented on this moment: “It was great to see KK playing with the band again. The fans loved it, and I think it was a very special moment in Judas Priest's history.”

KK Downing's departure and Richie Faulkner's arrival at Judas Priest

KK Downing's departure from Judas Priest in 2011 marked the end of an era for the band. The guitarist, who had been with the group for over 40 years, cited dissatisfaction with the band's management and musical direction, as well as personal issues that led him to decide to leave. In his autobiography, Heavy Duty: Days and Nights in Judas Priest , Downing revealed that he felt his role within the group was becoming increasingly diminished, which led him to decide to retire at the time.

With the departure of one of the founding members, the band needed to find a replacement, and Richie Faulkner was chosen for the position. He quickly won over the fans and brought a new energy to the group. "It was a great challenge to step into the shoes of an icon, but my mission has always been to honor KK's legacy while also bringing something of myself to the band," Faulkner stated.
