Just moments remained, the spotlights focused on the audience, 30,000 people waiting for him, only for him, and finally… ARE YOU READY?”
by Aline Rizzato
Six months of waiting, eight hours of travel, four hours standing waiting for that moment and… finally! The clock on September 10, 2011, finally struck 9 PM. A roadie signaled to raise the flag, and as it went up, my heart raced faster with each millisecond. The lights slowly dimmed, my abdomen was pressed against the Arena Anhembi railing, my hands trembled so much that my fingers couldn't even press the camera's on button.
Suddenly, a loud, deep, very deep sound, like a nervous volcano, Reb Bitch came running onto the left side of the stage with his arms raised, then Ronnie James Dio's friend, Doug Aldrich, and together Michael Devin on bass and Brian Tichy behind him, made hearts race even faster with the rapid beat of the bass drums. Just moments remained, the spotlights focused on the audience, 30,000 people waiting for him, only for him, and finally… ARE YOU READY??? – he shouted. They were in my country, in front of me, three meters away.
I couldn't hold back the tears, and to the sound of Best Years, I cried, sang, and screamed along with them, viscerally. Throughout the show, I savored every moment, remembering the last time I saw them – Curitiba, May 10, 2008. The power of eight tube amplifiers was even more intense, David's voice and performance, at the peak of his 60s, simply fantastic! The same sex appeal, the same contagious seduction as when he led the group that set Monteoux on fire more than 30 years ago (The cosmos conspiring in my favor, I just tuned into Kiss FM and at this very moment their Guilty of Love is playing, of course!).
Well, between 80s classics and new releases, the audience went wild to the sound of Is This Love, Love Ain't No Stranger, and also the new songs Forevermore and Good To Be Bad. The show was coming to an end, and surprising everyone once again, the frontman began singing Soldier of Fortune "a cappella," a song that moves me and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Total feeling, beautiful… everything beautiful, wonderful, extraordinary, but as all good things come to an end, the show of the band of my life was no different. With the Brazilian flag wrapped around his neck, Mr. "Dale" and his crew said goodbye to the Anhembi Arena.
It was an hour and a half of pure emotion, a feeling that words can't describe. I looked at them, not believing it was them, the real them, singing the songs I listen to every day, right there… in front of me. I waved, blew my last kiss, and the fantasy ended with a tight hug, to the sound of We Wish You Well. Thank you David Coverdale, thank you so much Whitesnake!
