Some people may not know this yet, but in 2019 the mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas, gave new meaning to June 8th for headbangers .
The date, which unfortunately was marked by the death of Andre Matos , founder of the bands Viper , Shaman, and Angra , was transformed into Municipal Metal Day . Since then, June 8th has been a moment of celebration in Brazilian metal, remembering the relevance of the genre and, especially, the life and career of Andre Matos.
The idea for the tribute came from Andre Matos' fans who created an online petition that eventually became a bill and, finally, a reality. The day Covas decided to approve the bill was celebrated by metal fans and also by our national artists.
Members of Angra, Shaman, and friends of Andre gathered at Praça da República, in downtown São Paulo, to celebrate the moment and the musician's legacy. Covas was present at the celebration and even took a picture with the group, demonstrating his unwavering support. See a photo of the moment below, shared today, the 15th, by Felipe Machado , bandmate and friend of Andre Matos.
We take this opportunity to wish strength to the family, friends, and all those close to Bruno Covas as the mayor battles a severe cancer.
