Red Hot Chili Peppers was one of the big highlights of the 2022 VMAs , which took place on Sunday night, the 28th.
The band was chosen this year to receive the 'Global Icon' award, which celebrates the career of a band or artist who has had a strong global impact on the music industry. They also performed a medley of the singles "Black Summer" and "Can't Stop". Check it out below.
In his acceptance speech following the performance, vocalist Anthony Kiedis thanked MTV for their support, as well as his three bandmates for giving him "a purpose in life for the last 40 years." Drummer Chad Smith then took the microphone and dedicated the award to the late Taylor Hawkins , drummer of the Foo Fighters . During the performance, Smith also had Hawkins' logo on his drum kit.
In addition to the honorary award, the Red Hot Chili Peppers also won the 'Best Rock Video' category with "Black Summer".
Two unreleased albums in the same year.
In April, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released the album Unlimited Love John Frusciante 's return . The album was a sales success, becoming the best-selling rock album of 2022 in less than two weeks.
A few months later, in August, the band announced that, for the first time in their history, they would be releasing a second album in the same year. The project is called Return Of The Dream Canteen and features 17 new tracks, with a release date set for October 14th. Check out the full tracklist here.
