Randy Blythe , lead singer of Lamb of God , commented on the role of social media in helping to spread fake news and conspiracy theories.
As reported by Loudwire , the metal musician was invited to speak about the topic on the Sing for Science , which invites artists and scientists to discuss various subjects.
In Blythe's view of the current rise in beliefs that deny science, people simply refuse to hear facts that contradict their preferred belief system – and this has gained even more traction with the platform provided by social media.
“Everyone’s interpretation of reality is subjective, but there is an objective reality. And it seems like they threw that in the trash,” the singer opined. “[People] don’t stop and say, ‘Hmm, maybe I’m wrong.’ I believe they suffer from extreme cognitive dissonance. And the way they’ve found to deal with it is simply to ignore the facts.”
Commenting specifically on fake news during the pandemic, Blythe lamented the portrayal of scientific work by some groups. “The science [regarding COVID-19] is new and imperfect; science is a process, it grows. As you gain more knowledge and data to analyze, you understand more. However, science doesn't have all the answers all the time – it's a process. That said, I never thought I would see the demonization of science as it has been happening now,” she said.
