Queen released a new song on Thursday, the 13th, featuring vocals by Freddie Mercury : “Face It Alone,” which was originally recorded for the band's penultimate album before the singer's death.
The song is a touching outpouring about facing a challenge difficult enough to make "the moon lose its shine." With resignation, Mercury sings that it's necessary to face everything alone in these moments of pain and tears.
This song was originally recorded in 1988, during the sessions for the album The Miracle , released the following year, but ended up being discarded from the final tracklist of the project. “We found a rare Freddie track that we had forgotten about, and it’s wonderful. In fact, it’s a real find,” said Roger Taylor about the song.
“She was kind of hiding in plain sight,” Brian May . “We looked at her several times and thought, ‘Oh, there’s no way to salvage this,’ but we actually tried again and our wonderful sound engineering team said, ‘Okay, we can do this and that.’ It’s like stitching the pieces together. But it’s beautiful. It’s touching.”
The release of “Face It Alone” is part of the promotional campaign for the album's re-release, which will reach fans on November 18th with a special collector's edition. The Miracle Collector's Edition will contain 8 CDs, with over an hour of unreleased studio material from the band and six new songs.
